Cutouts

Cutouts
On Monday night we had a brilliant rehearsal...everyone came up with amazing ideas!!! I felt very excited by the choreography that was created!
Last nights theme was 'Cutouts"...in Tong Chong Street there are 2 pieces of sculpture created by Allen Jones. The work deals with positive & negative space. I gave the dancers a visual simulus, a cutout created by Matisse. My plan is to explore different themes with the group over the next few weeks and develop their choreographic ideas. So at the moment we are not working directly with the materials I shall use to create the piece...at the moment we are 'playing' with different materials!!
Everyone created a series of statues in response to the image, then they linked them with a transitional piece of choreography, so everyone had a 4 x 8 sequence which they shared.
I was really impressed with the ideas that the dancers came up with!! We then expolred the 4 x 8's in a variety of ways, from doing the whole sequyence in reverse, to exploring pace, having moments of stillness, having to connect to a wall for a section of the piece, using cannon & repetition, etc. It was really exciting and reminded me that even a very simple phrase of choreography can be worked and worked in many ways to become even more exciting!!!
