Cutouts 2
As last weeks workshop was so fab...I decided to develop the theme of 'Cutouts'
This time I selected 3 images from Matisse and had the dancers create a sequence using all the techniques we looked at in last weeks rehearsal. Each dancer had 4 x 8 that reflected the shape, movement quality, energy and emotion of the 3 images that I had given them. I then explained that when I create a piece of choreography I think of it as a jigsaw, but unlike a jigsaw...which has a 'correct' outcome, when I create a piece it is just 'one way' of fitting all the pieces together. The same pieces can make an infinite number of final choreographies depending on how the pieces are put together. There is no right and no wrong way...it is subjective!!
We started off with everyone in small groups performing their solos and then creating transitions which then lead to group sections. I chose 'choreographers' for the group sections, they used their original 4 x 8 and then taught it to their group. I tried to pair the dancers up with people who moved in similar ways...everyone has their own unique movement vocabulary and quality of movement, its an individual as a finger print!
By the end of an hour and a half we had a finished piece! I was really happy with both groups and the work they made. This was another 'experimentation' workshop and next week we start creating the work which will be showcased at Arts in the Park and then performed at Urban Dance in Decemebr...can't wait!!!
